Week 3 Notes (PDF)FRISCO, Texas – Northwestern State’s Cayla Jones is the Southland Softball Conference Hitter of the Week while Nicholls’ Megan Landry earns the pitcher honor, the league announced Tuesday. Southland Conference Players of the Week are presented by UniversalCoin.com. Jones batted .625 and tallied 10 hits to lead Northwestern State to a perfect week. The freshman second baseman combined for five hits and six RBIs against Memphis and Stephen F. Austin. The Missouri City, Texas, native had the only two RBIs in a 4-2 win over the Tigers. The product of Elkins High School also launched a two-run homer to break a tie in a 4-1 win against the Ladyjacks on Thursday before providing the final RBI of a four-run inning in a 6-5 comeback win over SFA on Friday. She finished the week with a .938 slugging percentage and a .708 on base percentage. The Colonels (3-2, 0-0 SLC) opened their 2018 campaign this past weekend at the Black and Gold Tournament in Montgomery, Ala, claiming wins over Appalachian State, Holy Cross and Akron. Nicholls plays a doubleheader today at Alcorn State with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. The Colonels will then compete at the EMU Madeira Beach Tournament in Madera Beach, Fl., this weekend.center_img Honorable Mention: Mikayla Brown, Northwestern State; Hannah Null, Abilene Christian; Rachel Hayes, Southeastern Louisiana. After beginning the season 0-3, the Lady Demons (8-3, 0-0 SLC) turned things around in week two and claimed victories in all eight of their matches, including two wins over conference foe Stephen F. Austin and a defeat against Memphis. Northwestern State rides its eight-game winning streak into Arlington, Texas, on Wednesday, taking on UT Arlington at 5 p.m. CT before heading out to a weekend series at Texas Tech. In three appearances for the Colonels this past week, Landry posted a 2-0 record with a 0.46 ERA to go with 21 strikeouts across 15.1 innings. The junior from Pierre Part, La., struck out 10 batters in six innings for the win against Appalachian State in her season debut. She then shutout Akron and fanned five batters to give her a second win in as many starts. She came on in relief on Sunday against Middle Tennessee and struck out six while allowing just one hit to the Blue Raiders.­ Southland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school’s sports information director.
