Scholarship recipients will also get the opportunity to intern with one of Combs’ companies, Bad Boy Entertainment or Revolt Media & TV, and have a mentor from Combs Enterprises. During the concert, Combs referred to Howard and D.C. as home, crediting the school for giving him the fortitude to be the successful entrepreneur that he has become. Combs attended the school in the latter part of the 1980s before he dropped out in 1990. He received an honorary doctorate degree from the school in 2014.
The Metropolitan Police Department released video footage Nov. 18 of a person suspected in the Southeast homicide of a 40-year-old woman whose body was found in the woods. Police found the body at about 3 p.m. Nov. 8 when they were called to the 2600 block of Pomeroy Road, SE after receiving reports of a woman unconscious in the woods.According to police reports, Antina Cindette Pratt, a resident in Southeast D.C., was found in the wooded area near a highway and apartment buildings. Pratt had been stabbed multiple times and died on the scene.“There have not been any arrests made in this case and it is still under investigation, including motive,” Sean Hickman, an MPD spokesperson, told the AFRO Nov. 27.The person of interest was captured by nearby surveillance cameras, showing the suspect walking in a parking lot near the apartment buildings. The suspect appears to be wearing a hooded sweatshirt.Another subject in the surveillance video can be seen walking with the suspect, but Hickman said this person has been blurred out and is not the subject of interest.Members of the community such as Ward 8 Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner Paul Trantham said violent crimes like the murder of Pratt happen too often in Southeast. “Homicides in Southeast are not unusual. As a matter fact you can believe you are going to have at least two to three homicides a week,” Trantham told the AFRO on Nov. 28. He said the crime is continuous, “killing and stealing, and taking people’s money.”Trantham, a two-term councilmember of the 8B02 region in Ward 8, was on the scene the day of the slaying. He said the family of the victim had been called to the crime scene and were able to identify Pratt by what she was wearing. “They were upset,” he said repeatedly, describing the emotions of Pratt’s family. Police on the scene told Trantham the victim was married and lived nearby in the Barry Farms neighborhood.Trantham said a lot of the crime stems from guns being easily accessible in the neighborhood.“Until the city can get a handle on all these guns coming into the city we will keep revisiting this kind of violence,” he said. Trantham also blames drugs for a majority of the robberies and murders. “For drugs they will rob their friend, their mother, just to support a habit.”According to Trantham, who also works as a private investigator, there are more than 200 unsolved murders in Southeast D.C. According to the MPD website, there are 59 unsolved major case homicides and six unsolved transgender homicides in 2016.Trantham explained district officers are understaffed and residents are afraid to come forward about crimes. “It’s the lack of visibility and presence of police officers,” he said. However, poverty and a lack of resources is not an excuse for the amount of violence in the area, according to Trantham. He said young people need to apply themselves more, “It is poverty in our area, but I will no longer buy into they have no jobs available.” He said there are more than 30 new recreational centers in the district, “A lot of local leaders should stop saying they don’t have opportunities.”

By Micha Green, AFRO Washington, D.C. Editor, firstname.lastname@example.orgAs White supremacists rally for their “civil rights”- although it’s not clear which of their rights are at stake- the District’s local Black Lives Matter group, along with Shut it Down DC will be hosting a counter-protest.In June the National Park Service approved the application for the White Civil Rights Rally to have a demonstration in Lafayette Park near the White House for August 11 and 12. Since then, Black Lives Matter DC and Shut it Down DC have been working together to counter the narrative of the White supremacists and ultimately “confront fascism, anti-Semitism, Islamophobia, White supremacy, and state violence on August 10-12,” according to a statement feature on the Shut it Down DC website.Black Lives Matter DC and Shut it Down DC are organizing a counter-protest to take place during the time of the White Civil Rights rally August 10-12. (Courtesy photo)For Black Lives Matter DC and Shut it Down DC this counter-protest is a way of speaking up for those affected by the bloody day last August in Charlottesville, Virginia during the Unite the Right rally which resulted in the death of Heather Heyer, a 32-year-old White woman fighting against the supremacists, and injured and traumatized many more, such as Corey Long and Deandre Harris.“This is for Heather Heyer, Corey Long, Deandre Harris, ICE abolition, open borders, dismantling the prison industrial complex, and ending the settler colonial system,” wrote Shut It Down DC.According to The Root Long was shot at and Harris was brutally beaten at the rally, yet they both faced charges. Harris’ charges were eventually dropped, but Long was sentenced to 360 days in jail for disorderly conduct when using a flame thrower as self defense (even though he only had to serve 20 of those days).Jason Kessler, leader of Unite the Right, told WUSA 9 last month that the “White Civil Rights” marchers are rallying “to talk about the Civil Rights abuse that happened in Charlottesville, Va. last year.” Now the counter-protesters are gearing to hold them accountable for the violence and outrage last August 12.“Jason Kessler, Richard Spencer, and the Trump Adminstration are all implicated in the murder of Heather Heyer,” Shut it Down DC wrote.Black Lives Matter DC representative, Makia Green told Fox 5 why she felt the counter-protest was important. “We are stronger than they are, that they are resistant to change and to progress that Black Lives Matter has been doing over the last four years with Black liberation and fighting racism and fascism,” Green said. “So it’s important that we let D.C. and rest of the world know that we are not going to stand for the hate.”
By MICHAEL R. SISAK Associated PressNEW YORK (AP) — New York’s attorney general has opened a civil investigation into President Donald Trump’s business dealings, acting after his former personal lawyer and fixer told Congress that he exaggerated his wealth to obtain loans. Trump tweeted an apparent response Tuesday night, decrying his home state and its governor as “PRESIDENTIAL HARASSERS.”Attorney General Letitia James issued subpoenas Monday to Deutsche Bank and Investors Bank seeking records related to four Trump real estate projects and his failed 2014 bid to buy the NFL’s Buffalo Bills, according to a person familiar with the inquiry. In this Jan. 6, 2019 file photo, Attorney General of New York, Letitia James, smiles during an inauguration ceremony in New York. A person familiar with the inquiry said James issued subpoenas Monday, March 11, to Deutsche Bank and Investors Bank seeking records related to four Trump real estate projects and his failed 2014 bid to buy the NFL’s Buffalo Bills. (AP Photo/Seth Wenig, File)The person wasn’t authorized to discuss the matter publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity. The New York Times first reported the subpoenas.Trump’s former lawyer, Michael Cohen, told Congress in late February that Trump exaggerated his wealth on financial statements provided to Deutsche Bank when he was trying to obtain financing to buy the Bills.Cohen told a House committee it was common for Trump to overstate his wealth when dealing with the news media or banks and for him to understate it when it came time to pay his taxes.“New York State and its Governor, Andrew Cuomo, are now proud members of the group of PRESIDENTIAL HARASSERS,” Trump tweeted . “No wonder people are fleeing the State in record numbers. The Witch Hunt continues!”Cuomo’s office didn’t immediately respond.Deutsche Bank said in a statement that it remains “committed to cooperating with authorized investigations.” Messages left with New Jersey-based Investors Bank and the Trump Organization were not immediately returned. The subpoenas issued by the attorney general seek loan applications, as well as mortgages, credit lines and other documents related to the Trump International Hotel in Washington, D.C., buildings in Chicago and New York and a golf course in the Miami area.Several Congressional committees have also requested documents from Deutsche Bank. California Rep. Maxine Waters, a Democrat and head of the House Financial Services Committee, said last week that the bank is cooperating.Deutsche Bank has been one of the few major banks willing to regularly lend to Trump, whose past financial troubles scared off large New York banks. Trump’s company borrowed billions of dollars from the German bank over the years. In May, five Democratic members of the House of Representatives sent a letter to Deutsche Bank CEO John Cryan asking the bank to turn in any records relating to Trump’s accounts and any ties to Russia. The bank refused, saying it had to respect legal requirements to keep client data private.James, a Democrat newly elected to office, pledged to look into Trump’s business practices, saying after her victory last November that she’d be “shining a bright light into every dark corner of his real estate dealings and every dealing.”Trump has complained that James is waging a politically motivated vendetta against him. Her office is also overseeing a lawsuit against a Trump charitable foundation. James’ predecessors sued Trump over the operations of Trump University, his real estate school.Previously, a different New York state agency, which regulates insurance companies, launched an inquiry into Cohen’s allegations that Trump also misled insurance companies about his financial worth.Trump has said Cohen is lying to try to get out of a prison sentence for tax evasion, campaign finance violations, making false statements to banks and lying to Congress.__Follow Michael Sisak at twitter.com/mikesisak

MADRID — “La Casa de Papel” (“Money Heist”) Part 3 wowed at its world premiere in Madrid Thursday night, boosted by the presence of creator Alex Pina, a 23-strong cast headed by the Professor’s Alvaro Morte and Tokyo’s Ursula Corberó and Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos.Just Episode One was screened and its contents under wraps for the press until the global bow on Netflix on July 19.If the reaction of the Madrid audience was anything to go by, however – though they might be called a little biased, including multiple members of cast, Pina’s Vancouver production house crew, who emerged as one of the stars of proceedings – Ep. 1 is one 50-minute adrenaline fix.Several moments drew applause and cheers from the a knowing audience, well versed in Parts One and Two which spilled out onto the central Callao Square inMadrid enervated by the episode. ×Actors Reveal Their Favorite Disney PrincessesSeveral actors, like Daisy Ridley, Awkwafina, Jeff Goldblum and Gina Rodriguez, reveal their favorite Disney princesses. Related ‘Orange Is the New Black’ Creator Jenji Kohan and Star Uzo Aduba Bid Farewell “For generations one country and one culture have been exported around the world, but what ‘La Casa de Papel’ proves is that great stories can come from anywhere in the world and make the whole world happy,” said Sarandos,Introduced to the audience by Francisco Ramos, Netflix VP, Original Series, producer of “Elite,” another big Netflix hit, Sarandos added: “The show is extraordinary. It is from Spain but viewed all over the world. From Istanbul to Paris, from Rio to Los Angeles, fans love this show, they cannot wait, they can’t get enough of this infamous men, and they are waiting for the return.”Thanking Pina and his producing partner Cristina López, Sarandos announced that “we really have the best international superstar cast to make this show possible” – an indirect reference to how the fame of the series’ actors, none real stars outside Spain before “La Casa de Papel” – has spiked hugely with the series, which was declared by Netflix in April of last year to be its most-watched non-English series ever.Pina also thanked Diego Avalos, previously in Los Angeles but named head of fiction in Spain this February, for a night of conversation “about phones and socks” before describing the La Casa de Papel gang as a band which “robs, feels and makes people laugh.” Pina’s take on his series is that it is an eminently Latin action thriller whose characters wear their emotions far more on their sleeves than more buttoned U.S. personages.Giving thanks above all to the crew of “La casa de papel” – whose work on Part 3 looks destined to be one of the talking points of the new season – Alvaro Morte delivered a message in English to “La Casa de Papel” fans: What’s Coming to Netflix in September 2019 “Thank you for being there watching the show, supporting us, sending us our love that we feel in our stomach,” he said, adding: “We are here tonight just for you. We are a band, we are a family, now you are part of that band, we are the resistance. And now you are the resistance too.”Talking about resistance to the system, Morte looks to be teasing one of the appeals of Part 3 where the band’s representation of the world’s disaffected, social write-offs, misfits, the marginalized – may become all the more clear. In a festive atmosphere, the presentations were met by cheers by a hugely enthusiastic audience. The after-premiere party will have gone on far into the night. Popular on Variety
Uber Copter Flights Are Launching in NYC Next MonthNASA’s Mars Helicopter Passes First Test Flight With Flying Colors Stay on target There’s not a lot that can shock New Yorkers, but even the city’s residents were stunned to see an upside-down helicopter flying over the Hudson River and flipping in full view of the Statue of Liberty, Battery Park and alongside the West Side Highway. As a sneak peek for the upcoming Memorial Day Bethpage Air Show, aerobatic helicopter pilot Aaron Fitzgerald performed the incredible aerial maneuvers over New York City during the early morning hours of Saturday, May 18. Flying a Red Bull Helicopter, Fitzgerald — a former U.S. Army Paratrooper in the Airborne Division — flips, barrel rolls, and nose dives using a unique titanium rotor. It allows Fitzgerald to reverse the airflow through the rotor without damaging anything, ensuring he can safely execute the maneuvers.A Medal of Valor recipient, Fitzgerald joined Red Bull’s Flying Bulls aerobatics team in 2017. He has flown utility flying in mountainous terrain and offshore support, in flight test programs for NASA, and performed and filmed for over 100 films and TV shows.Aaron Fitzgerald performs a nose dive in front of the Statue of Liberty on May 18, 2019. What to Stream on Netflix This Weekend11 Other Old-School Nick Shows That Should Get Netflix Movies Stay on target Netflix is about to get a little bloody, if the first trailer for Santa Clarita Diet is any indication. The streaming service has released a number of coy ads that only alluded to the show’s bloody story. However, on Tuesday Netflix released its first trailer, which comes out and says it: this is a show about cannibalism. And zombies, sort of.The new comedy starring Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant shows a suburban couple struggling with an interesting health problem. Barrymore, who plays Sheila, starts craving raw meat after her heart stops beating one day. She claims she feels fine–in fact, she has more energy than usual–but she is also victim to a rampant id and a craving for human flesh, which leads to murder.Olyphant, who plays her husband, and the rest of the family, have to figure out how to deal with the change/The official synopsis, released in March of last year along with the casting of its leads, was vague, leaving the actual plot hidden:“Joel and Sheila Hammond are realtors leading vaguely discontented lives in the L.A. suburb of Santa Clarita until Sheila goes through a dramatic change sending both their lives down a road of death and destruction…but in a good way.”Some teasers released following the Golden Globe Awards hinted at the undead plot point but stopped just short of announcing it.It’s unclear whether Sheila will succumb to other symptoms of zombiehood, including body or brain decay, or if her condition is even a sign of a greater pandemic. According to Barrymore, it’s a personal story.“What if she finds herself, and we do this sort of Cro-Magnon type of evolution with her over the course of the ten episodes. No gimmicks, no prosthetics, just an awakening,” Barrymore told USA Today.Either way, we can expect a lot of quirky and dark humor. Santa Clarita Diet comes from the mind of Victor Fresco, who was behind Better off Ted, a sitcom that reveled in deadpan and twisted humor. The show will also feature several guest stars, including Nathan Fillion, who’s basically always welcome.Santa Clarita Diet debuts on Netflix on Feb. 2.
Now that Steam has come to Linux — and with it, brought a handful of popular games, as well as a larger handful of less popular games — the platform is very slowly becoming viable for gaming. However, Linux games still tend to be ports — and we all know that while ports are better than nothing, they’re usually not as good as developing a game natively. Kickstarter project Leadwerks for Linux aims to do just that, and bring sophisticated game development to Linux.Ironically, Leadwerks did not begin life as a Linux tool, and the development team will actually be porting it over to Linux. Do as it says, not as it does, we suppose. The software is touted as a visual tool for building “any kind of 3D game.” Though the software will run natively on Linux (Ubuntu 12.04 is the first target), it will mercifully allow you to port your game to Windows and OS X — considering all that hard work being limited to the comparatively small Linux audience wouldn’t be the best reward. Leadwerks also provides the capability for top-notch graphics, so while clever indie platformers with pixelated “retro” graphics seem to keep the masses happy, we won’t necessarily be inundated with more of them. Now that Steam has come to Linux, Leadwerks will also connect to the Steam Workshop, so you can reap the benefit of all the wacky and not-so-wacky creations sitting on the service. Furthermore, Leadwerks will allow for a simple submission to Steam Greenlight through the press of a button. The Kickstarter campaign already hit its funding goal of $20,000 with 21 days still remaining, but with most Kickstarter campaigns, there is still a stretch goal. Currently, if the funding hits $26,000, OUYA and Android support will be added to Leadwerks; other stretch goals have not yet been revealed, but the wording suggests there will be more added if the first one is reached. If you’re interested in developing a game for Linux on Linux, or you just wish other people would, head on over to the campaign page and kick in a few bucks.
