Lifeguards rescue man stuck on cliff in Torrey Pines

first_imgLifeguards rescue man stuck on cliff in Torrey Pines February 22, 2018 SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – Lifeguards and firefighters Thursday morning rescued an uninjured man who became stranded on a cliff while trying to climb down the beachfront bluffs in Torrey Pines, authorities said. The man called for help a little after 6:30 a.m. while attempting to reach the beach from the Torrey Pines Gliderport after he “found himself in a spot where he couldn’t go any further,” San Diego Fire-Rescue Department spokeswoman Monica Munoz said.Lifeguards responded to the beach area below the Gliderport in the 2800 block of Torrey Pines Scenic Drive, but they were initially unable to locate the stranded man from their vantage point on the sand, Munoz said. An SDFD helicopter spotted the man precariously perched on a ledge roughly half way down the cliffs.“He was lowered down using a rope system by lifeguards and firefighters,” Munoz said, adding the non-injury rescue should serve as a warning to others.“This is a good example of why you should heed the signs and not climb down the cliffs,” Munoz said. Golfweeks Bland Rage

first_imgLots of buzz online about the termination of editor Dave Seanor over this cover, which refers to a thoughtlessly stupid remark by golf anchor Kelly Tighman. It’s worth noting that the controversy over this cover is inextricably wrapped up in its conceptual quality. The insipid stock image brings nothing to the package that isn’t explicit in the headline. The noose may be a loaded cliché, but that doesn’t mean it’s not just as tiresome on a magazine cover as any other over-used icon. Now, clichés have their place, and all visual communicators must rely on them (at least once in a while) because they provide a shared visual language. But the trouble with using them unthinkingly and without a context that makes them story-specific is that either they’re boring and obvious–or they convey unintended meanings—or both. If the noose (or better yet a net—”Caught in a Net” works just as well, once you aren’t relying on the noose to provide a link to Tighman’s quote) was clearly catching a television set showing Tighman on the golf channel—it might not have been wonderful (especially if the new cover maintained the phony small caps and clunky outlining on the headline), but it’s hard to imagine it getting the same strongly negative reaction as the generic “ominous noose” pictured here. And, if nothing else, a reader would have known—just by looking—that this is a media story.[Editor’s note: For more intelligent design talk, buy Jandos’ new book.]last_img read more

BSNL privatisation Salary delay worsening fiscal crisis intensify speculation

first_imgA woman walks past a logo of the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) painted on a wall outside its office in Kolkata, India. A delay in payment of July salaries to BSNL staff has intensified speculation about the timing of the public sector telecom player’s privatization.REUTERS/Rupak De ChowdhuriThe failure to pay the staff of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) their salaries for July has triggered fresh speculation about the privatisation of the public sector telecom providers.Industry observers claim the government’s focus shifted to BSNL and MTNL after speeding up the privatisation procedures of national carrier Air India. The government has ordered Air India to freeze all appointments and promotions, setting the field for the privatization process. For the first time after Prime Minister Narendra Modi swept back to power, BSNL reportedly failed to pay its 1.76 lakh employees on time. The two public sector units (PSUs) had delayed salaries for February until mid-March due to a financial crisis. The BSNL had then said that it used its internal accruals to clear the pending salaries. The government, during its earlier stint, had held back sanction to the public sector telecom player for introducing 4G services, handing a major advantage to private-sector competitors. The government has also dithered on a decision to allow its participation in the imminent 5G trials. While BSNL chairman and managing director PK Purwar said that employees will get the July salary this week, an employees’ union leader said that no information had been shared by the management about early salary payment, according to PTI. “Salary for the month of July has not come. There is also no information when will it be credited,” the report quoted the All India Unions and Associations of BSNL (AUAB) convenor, P Abhimanyu, as saying. BSNL has continued to lose customers to private-sector competition as delayed government decisions have blocked the updating of its services.Facebook/ ReutersPurwar told the news agency that employees would get the salary in this week. “Funds are being arranged through internal accruals,” Purwar said. BSNL has 1.76 lakh employees across the country and MTNL about 22,000 employees. This is for the first time that the two public sector companies have defaulted on paying the staff on time after the new government took charge. The BSNL needs Rs 750 crore to Rs 850 crore for salaries while the MTNL needs around Rs 160 crore. The report said the MTNL Human Resource and Enterprise Business director Sunil Kumar said the company was in the process of collecting some dues after which the salary would be paid on a priority basis “very soon”.last_img read more

Related ‘Orange Is the New Black’ Creator Jenji Kohan and Star Uzo Aduba Bid Farewell “For generations one country and one culture have been exported around the world, but what ‘La Casa de Papel’ proves is that great stories can come from anywhere in the world and make the whole world happy,” said Sarandos,Introduced to the audience by Francisco Ramos, Netflix VP, Original Series, producer of “Elite,” another big Netflix hit, Sarandos added: “The show is extraordinary. It is from Spain but viewed all over the world. From Istanbul to Paris, from Rio to Los Angeles, fans love this show, they cannot wait, they can’t get enough of this infamous men, and they are waiting for the return.”Thanking Pina and his producing partner Cristina López, Sarandos announced that “we really have the best international superstar cast to make this show possible” – an indirect reference to how the fame of the series’ actors, none real stars outside Spain before “La Casa de Papel” – has spiked hugely with the series, which was declared by Netflix in April of last year to be its most-watched non-English series ever.Pina also thanked Diego Avalos, previously  in Los Angeles but named head of fiction in Spain this February, for a night of conversation “about phones and socks” before describing the La Casa de Papel gang as a band which “robs, feels and makes people laugh.” Pina’s take on his series is that it is an eminently Latin action thriller whose characters wear their emotions far more on their sleeves than more buttoned U.S. personages.Giving thanks above all to the crew of “La casa de papel” – whose work on Part 3 looks destined to be one of the talking points of the new season – Alvaro Morte delivered a message in English to “La Casa de Papel” fans:center_img What’s Coming to Netflix in September 2019 “Thank you for being there watching the show, supporting us, sending us our love that we feel in our stomach,” he said, adding: “We are here tonight just for you. We are a band, we are a family, now you are part of that band, we are the resistance. And now you are the resistance too.”Talking about resistance to the system, Morte looks to be teasing one of the appeals of Part 3 where the band’s representation of the world’s disaffected, social write-offs, misfits, the marginalized – may become all the more clear. In a festive atmosphere, the presentations were met by cheers by a hugely enthusiastic audience. The after-premiere party will have gone on far into the night. Popular on Variety last_img read more
