Hurricane Simon weakening off Mexicos coast

first_imgMIAMI — Simon is rapidly weakening but remains a major hurricane in the Pacific that poses no direct threat to land.The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami says Simon’s maximum sustained winds decreased to 115 mph Sunday. The Category 4 hurricane is expected to continue weakening.The center says the hurricane is located about 435 miles west of the southern tip of the Baja peninsula and is moving northwest at 10 mph. There are no coastal watches or warnings in effect.Simon is expected to produce up to 4 inches of rain, with isolated amounts of 8 inches, across central portions of the peninsula and in the northwestern state of Sonora. Swells could cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.last_img
